Close Calls and a Kardashian Clothes Call

April 20, 2012 @ No Comments

You figured a Chicago sports team would be in for a physical battle Thursday (April 19). Who knew it would be the Bulls rather than the Blackhawks receiving the most cheap shots?

Khloe, Kim and Kourtney Kardashian will make an appearance at Sears in Woodfield Mall on Friday to promote their clothing line.

* The Miami Heat beating the visiting Bulls means little — other than the Bulls still are yet to clinch the best record in the East. Which also means little in that the No. 1 seed in the East has reached the NBA Finals once in the last nine years. What means a lot is the health of Derrick Rose. If the injured Bulls guard is not close to functioning at his Most Valuable Player level, the Bulls won’t make it to the next level — meaing the Finals.

* Now that the Blackhawks are one loss away from heading to the golf course (or wherever hockey players go after their season ends), you have to wonder at what point some Blackhawk will take a shot at a Phoenix player the way that Raffi Torres of the Coyotes did to Marian Hossa of the Hawks. If the NHL wanted to do away with fighting and cheap shots, it could. But what would you have if you did? A sport that involves incredible athletes performing incredible feats. And who wants that when you can provide WWE action on ice?

* If it’s any consolation to Cubs fans (and the guess here is that it is not), the Los Angeles Angels are 4-10 with Albert Pujols, arguably the best player (or at least batter) in baseball. The Cubs are 3-9 without anyone close to the level of Pujols. And the Cubs are not close to the payroll of the Angels. The Cubs are in last place and six games behind Pujols’ former employer, the St. Louis Cardinals. The Angels are in last place, seven games behind the team Pujols’ former employer beat in the 2011 World Series, the Texas Rangers. Yeah, told you it probably wouldn’t be much consolation to Cubs fans.

* It may be a bit early to feel this way, but the Cubs could use a shot in the arm — other than the cortisone variety given to reliever Kerry Wood for his right shoulder.

* The Miami Marlins are drawing about 81 percent of capacity in their new ballpark. Maybe they can add an Ozzie Guillen dunk tank or something to increase attendance.

* Speaking of fans in the stands, the White Sox appear to among the early favorites to lead the major leagues in one category: worst attendance. The Sox ranks No. 27 with average attendance of 22,610. THe only teams faring worse are Seattle (22,110), Kansas City (20,862) and Cleveland (18,219).

* Speaking of drawing a crowd, the Kardashian sisters — Kim, Khloe and Kourtney — are scheduled for an appearance Friday at the Sears store in Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Ill. No word whether Lamar Odom, Khloe’s husband, will be along for the ride. No longer playing this season in the NBA, Odom has plenty of free time — leading some to speculate that divorce may not be too far away. As the saying goes (and don’t you ever wonder where exactly they go?), “I married you for better and for worse, but not for lunch.”

Thank you to Kimberly Anderson of the Lingerie Football League Chicago Bliss and to best-selling author Robert Kurson (“Shadow Divers,” “Crashing Through”) for appearing on Thursday’s “Sports & Torts” show with David Spada and Elliott Harris on talkzone.com. Kimberly informed about Bliss tryouts on April 28 at the Bridgeview Sportsdome, even though the LFL will not have games in the United States for the 2012 season. Robert provided insight and information regarding the Three Stooges (he wrote the official THree Stooges encyclopedia as well as a Three Stooges Cookbook) and offered a critique of the new “The Three Stooges” movie.
