All Atwitter About Trestman’s Twitter Remark

Random thoughts (OK, as close as we get to such things around here) while wondering if there are Twitter terrorists how soon before there are Facebook fascists:

* Chicago Bears coach Marc Trestman held his weekly Monday press conference and uttered the words “Twitter terrorists” in reference to some who criticize his players, coaches and him. In this day and age and troubled times, why would a smart man such as Trestman would use such a phrase? Perhaps to take the focus away from the players and their performance in losing Sunday at Carolina. At least briefly before folks focus on a football — rather than a linguistic — concern.

* Speaking of focus, the Chicago Bulls opened their exhibition season with 85-81 loss to the Washington Wizards at the United Center. There goes the Bulls’ 12-game exhibition winning streak. Oh, and Derrick Rose did not suffer anything resembling a season-ending injury. Pau Gasol did show shooting range for a big man the Bulls haven’t had since … Horace Grant? Maybe ever.

* Rookie Nikola Mirotic had an impressive Bulls debut with team-high 17 points in 22 minutes. Something says his playing time won’t be quite that much during the regular season. But he does offer something beside a big man who also can shoot from long range; he offers hope — which has been in short supply lately, except among the most ardent Bulls fans.

* Speaking of the Wizards, they have added Paul Pierce this season. He showed he was in midseason form for the Bulls (and fans) to dislike with a hard foul of Jimmy Butler in the second quarter. Considering Washington eliminated the Bulls from last season’s playoffs, something says this could be one of the Bulls’ better (or is that bitter?) rivalries.

* Speaking of midseason form, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau obviously is not in his. No player logged 40 minutes or more. No player logged 30 minutes or more. As they say, it’s early. Wait till the regular season.

* Speaking of the regular season, that’s when the 2014 Chicago Cubs ended playing. Meanwhile the St. Louis Cardinals, who won the National League Central division in which the Cubs reside (in the basement, in case anyone has forgotten), are one victory away from the National League Championship Series after Monday night’s 3-1 victory vs. the visiting Los Angeles in Game 3. Rookie second baseman Kolten Wong hits two-run home run in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie. OK, so Wong isn’t as good as any Cubs second-base prospects. And he won’t be improving while Cubs prospects will. I understand. Not really. And not really realistic to think all or most or more than a handful of Cubs prospects will become quality big-league ballplayers.

* Speaking of the Cards-Dodgers series, you have to admit Los Angeles center fielder Yasiel Puig is doing his best — or possibly worst? — Javier Baez impression. Puig struck out seven consecutive times before tripling in the sixth inning.

* Oh, and St. Louis starter John Lackey, who allowed one run in seven innings, was a late-season acquisition with a 2015 contract that will cost the Cards $500,000. Compare and contrast that with any starter for the 2015 Cubs. Yeah, but he’s old. He’ll be retired before Kris Bryant hits his last big-league homer for the Cubs. Yes, there’s that.
