Blackhawks Zero In on Offseason

April 24, 2012 @ No Comments

Random thoughts while wondering which of the Chicago Blackhawks has the earliest tee time now that the Phoenix Coyotes have eliminated them from the NHL’s postseason:

Chicago Blackhawks Ice Crew member Becky is all smiles. OK, maybe not.

* The electric atmosphere. The backs to the wall. The feeling that fan support is an element to success. How did all that work for the Blackhawks in Game 6? Exactly the way things worked in their two other playoff games at their beloved United Center — with a loss. This one was 4-0. And so, home ice would appear a bit overrated. Unless it’s the ice at home you’re using to make a drink. Sobering thought, huh?

* Basketball icon and Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan was at the Hawks-Coyotes game Monday (April 23). So were the Chicago Luvabulls. It’s as close as MJ is going to get to having a postseason presence at the United Center any time soon.

* Any delay in punishment by the NBA for Metta World Peace (formerly known as Ron Artest when he played with the Bulls) must be attributed to working out details for a cage match against Raffi Torres of the Coyotes whose cheap shot in Game 3 of their playoff series ended Marian Hossa’s season.

* Among other things, Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery said Monday was there is a sense of urgency for the team to win this year. Good to know. Because there usually isn’t? Maybe Emery simply doesn’t want to be confused with Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein , who is working on reconstructing a team that will win sometime beyond this season. If Epstein can win a World Series in the next 103 seasons, it will be an improvement for the Cubs whose last World Series crown came in 1908.

* Speaking of the Cubs, can Epstein really be credited with dumping salary when the team picks up much of the money owed played dealt away?

* Don’t look now (on second thought, maybe you should) but while this is being typed, the White Sox are tied with the Detroit Tigers for first place in the American League Central; and the Cubs are one game away from being out of the National League Central cellar. Plus the Cubs defeated the division-leading St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 on Monday night at Wrigley Field by scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Hey, if you can’t get excited after a solitary victory, when can you?

* New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie had this heart-warming farewell to the Nets, who played their last home game in the Garden State on Monday: “They want to leave here and go to Brooklyn? Good riddance.” Gee, some of us thought Christie might have been bigger than that.

And so we say goodbye for this season to the lovely ladies of the Chicago Blackhawks Ice Crew. They did their part.
