The Chicago Bulls’ unbeaten road record this season ended Thursday in a 103-88 loss to the Sacramento Kings. To add injury to insult, Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich suffered a “chest contusion” when he took a charge. Meaning the likelihood of Hinrich playing Friday at Portland is unknown as today’s effort is being crafted typed in the early hours of Friday.
* Speaking of the Bulls’ defeat, Jimmy Butler once again led the team in scoring with 23 points. Maybe every season should be a contract year for him. Or maybe he realizes he has a chance to make an impression that could theoretically make him the face of the franchise rather than Rose. Or the face of some other franchise after he enters free agency after the season.
* For those keeping score at home (or elsewhere), Rose has missed three consecutive contests and seven overall this season. The Bulls have played 12. At this rate, he will be well-rested for the postseason. Either that or sitting on the bench in street clothes.
* Also for the record, Bulls backup center Nazr Mohammed played a minute in his season debut. At this rate, he will make it into at least six — and possibly seven — games. Meaning he will be well-rested for the postseason. Well, provided that his joints don’t stiffen up too much during the course of the regular season.
* Speaking of the Bulls’ bench, few more injuries and Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau might have to give Tony Snell and rookie Doug McDermott more minutes.
* Quote of the night, courtesy of Kings coach Michael Malone on the game being on TNT as some sort of incentive to play well: “I don’t care if we’re on TNT or the Home Shopping Network.”
* What we learned watching basketball: The Bulls — without Derrick Rose and Pau Gasol — beat the Clippers in Los Angeles. The Clippers defeated the Heat — without Dwyane Wade – in Miami. The logical conclusion to be drawn from this? Some would say the Bulls would beat the Heat, regardless of who is playing. Some would say it’s November, it’s the regular season in the NBA, and there are no logical conclusions to be drawn now. Possibly even later in the season or postseason. Or ever.
* Speaking of logical conclusions, White Sox fans might offer an observation that the team’s bullpen improved Thursday with the departure of reliever Ronald Belisario. Ah, yes, the delightful “addition by subtraction” theme. Something says Sox fans won’t miss Belisario an his 5.56 earned-run average. Something also says the Sox still need an actual bullpen addition. Or two. Or three.
