Midweek musings: The Chicago Bulls sent guard Marquis Teague to the NBA Development League’s Iowa Energy on Tuesday. Well, they tried to but had to recall him because guard Mike James injured a knee in Monday’s triple-overtime loss to the visiting New Orleans Pelicans. Well, that ought to boost Teague’s confidence — assuming he has any at this point.
* Speaking of confidence, unless the Bulls are confident they can sign forward Luol Deng to a deal that makes sense for the team (meaning Deng likely would be taking less money than he could find on the free-agent market after the season), it’s time to deal him. Fans — as well as Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau — might hate to see him go, but they would hate more to see him get injured and/or exit via free agency with the Bulls no compensation.
* Speaking of moves, the Chicago Cubs made another offseason one on Tuesday. They named Eric Hinske first-base coach. You can just feel the excitement building among Cubs fans.
* Speaking of the Cubs, they tendered a contract to second baseman Darwin Barney. Because he is a good fielder. And because he hit .207 in 2013. And he surely will hit better this season. Just as the thinking was he would hit better than the .254 he posted in 2012 after batting .276 in 2011. It’s unclear how low the Cubs are willing to let the bar be before they look for a second baseman who can field and hit.
* On the bright side for the Cubs (well, there isn’t exactly one for the Cubs right now but this might qualify), they did not fork out a $153 million, seven-year deal to center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury. Which is what the New York Yankees did — because megabuck deals like that do not end well. Well, other than for the player.
* Speaking of the Red Sox, they signed former White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski to a one-year deal. He replaces Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who signed a three-year, $21 million deal with the Miami Marlins. The deal seems a bit unusual for the Marlins, who generally would balk at the cost involved in the additional lettering on the back of his uniform.
If this is Wednesday (and something says it just might be because yesterday was Tuesday — provided that today is Dec. 4, 2013, or a subsequent Wednesday), then it is almost time for another edition of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris at noon Central time on Talkzone.com.
The highly acclaimed interview show (well, rumor has it that it is held in such high regard in the Spada and Harris households, as well as various and assorted locations with various and assorted people) will feature Playboy’s Playmate for December 2013 Kennedy Summers and former football star Herschel Walker.
For those who are unable to tune in for the show and/or for those who would like to enjoy an encore airing (and given the fact that there is a video component to the program, it is recommended to check out the aforementioned Playmate.
Here is where to go for a daily dose of non-gratuitous video (thanks to the eccentric efforts of the editorial and video departments at elliottharris.com):
