Random thoughts while wondering whether guard Derrick Rose’s fragility is to the Chicago Bulls what pitcher Jake Peavy’s has been to the White Sox:
* The Bulls lost 87-84 to the Washington Wizards on Monday night (April 16) at the United Center. The Bulls were without Rose and fellow all-star Luol Deng. And without much energy. Or so it seemed to some who viewed the game.
* Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau on his team’s effort (or lack thereof): “That’s what turnovers do to you [the Bulls had 17]. They sap your energy. You correct it by making the simple pass. We’re not deterred by the result. We have to keep making the same play. We are trying to thread the needle. You have to hit the first open man.”
* Speaking of hitting (or something like that), White Sox designated hitter Adam Dunn is in midseason form. Unfortunately for him and the Sox, that season would be 2011 when he struggled mightily. An 0-for-5 Monday with three strikeouts in a 10-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles in 10 innings dropped his 2012 batting average to .200.
* Tuesday night in Miami will find the Chicago Cubs playing the Marlins with manager Ozzie Guillen ending his exile for saying he loved Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Castro being an exception to the saying, “No man is an island.”
* Running back Matt Forte, who wants a new contract, is not attending the Chicago Bears’ voluntary workouts. Let me know when he decides to skip something mandatory, and then it might be cause for concern.
* It’s unclear whether Nike can take credit for the early success of Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski at the plate this season. With a 3-for-3 night Monday, he is batting. 370. Pierzynski is featured in a Nike commercial; so is second baseman Gordon Beckham, who went 0-for-4 with a strikeout Monday as his average fell to .115. With .200 called the “Mendoza line,” Beckham is on the verge of having hitting .100 named in his honor (or dishonor, depending how seriously you take these things).
If things go according to plan (and by now faithful visitors to this site — and even the philanderers — realize they occasionally do), there will be video of the Luvabulls from Monday night’s game and video from Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2 2012).
For those disinclined to view Bulls-Wizards videos — or at least inclined to peruse videos from the Rock Star Bikini contest in March in Columbus, Ohio — here is something that could work:
