Bulls to Rebuild Whether Rose Likes It or Not

December 18, 2013 @ No Comments

Midweek musings: There are rumblings about Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose being unhappy with the idea that the team might rebuild. Well, even if the thought of Luol Deng and/or Carlos Boozer not being on the team next season is upsetting to Rose while he recuperates from knee surgery, someone should remind him that Michael Jordan (remember the guy who helped the franchise to six NBA titles?) never was allowed to play general manager when he was playing for the Bulls. Rose won’t be afforded to make the calls either. And he might want to be back performing at a Most Valuable Player level before even thinking about suggesting who else should be on the team.

* Speaking of general managers, you have to wonder when Bulls GM Gar Forman (and his boss John Paxson) will bear some of the responsibility of putting together a team that appears less well-rounded, less athletic and less talented than the team’s opponents. OK, maybe you don’t have to wonder. But some of us do.

Playboy’s Cybergirl of the month for October Ali Rose is not a cookbook contributor. She does have other redeeming qualities.

* The Chicago Cubs reportedly have signed reliever Jose Veras to a one-year deal. The price — a reported $4 million — was right. With an 0-5 record and 3.02 earned-run average in 2013 with the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers, he is the perfect fit for a team that doesn’t figure to have a lot of save opportunities.

* Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs plans to return to practice and hopes to play Sunday night at Philadelphia against the Eagles. No matter how much he plays the rest of the season (and possibly postseason), he still will have logged less camera time on the playing field than he has on his weekly Comcast SportsNet show.

* If it’s December (which the editorial staff around here is fairly certain that it is), then it must be time for another edition of the JayTheJoke Holiday Cookbook. And indeed Bill McCormick — the man who runs the jaythejoke.com web site and who is a friend and who has been so extremely helpful in making this site possible (don’t hold that against him) — has produced another masterpiece with contributions so wonderful and unusual from a cast of characters so wonderful (full disclosure: I am among the cookbook contributors and honored to be among them). Among the cookbook’s best selling points is its price: It’s free. And worth every dollar you don’t have to spend on it. For your copy (hey, they make great gifts if your printer — or someone’s printer — has enough paper in it to accommodate an 86-page cookbook), you can click here. Enjoy.
