Midweek musings: The results from Tuesday are in, and they are a little surprising. Not politics, but the Chicago Bulls. Not surprising they defeated the visiting Orlando Magic 98-90. After all, the Magic is winless this season. What was surprising was the performance of reserve guard Aaron Brooks. Not surprising he had 13 points and a game-high eight assists. What was surprising he had three blocked shots to lead the Bulls. Likely the first and last time that will happen this season.

* Speaking of election night, the Ricketts family — which owns the Chicago Cubs — finally has fielded a winner. Not on a baseball diamond. But Pete Ricketts did win the election for Nebraska governor. One day the Cubs named Joe Maddon manager, the next the Ricketts family wins big in politics. Obviously momentum is on their side. A World Series crown cannot be far off. With President Ricketts greeting the ballclub to the White House to celebrate their eighth consecutive championship. Maybe more. No? OK, maybe not. Some of us are satisfied merely with not living in Nebraska.
* Speaking of Pete Ricketts, in his failed 2006 bid to become a U.S. Senator from Nebraska, he spent the greatest sum in state history to become a senator. So maybe the rest of the family actually will spend some money on signing free agents. Oh, wait. Politics is more important to Joe Ricketts — patriarch of the family — than baseball.
* Speaking of the Bulls (as we were a couple of paragraphs ago), rookie Doug McDermott came off the bench and had 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting in 12 minutes. Rookie Nikola Mirotic had eight points (2-of-5 from the field, including 2-of-4 three-pointers), six rebounds and four assists in 23 minutes. “I love them both,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said.
* Speaking of players whom Thibodeau should be fond of, Jimmy Butler played like a guy in a contract year with 21 points and nine rebounds in 35 minutes. Pau Gasol had 16 points and 13 rebounds in a team-high 41 minutes. Something says Gasol’s playing time won’t be as great Wednesday when the Bulls play at Milwaukee — even if Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah sit out the game, as they did Tuesday. Whether he wants to or not, Thibodeau has handed out playing time to more players (and more minutes) than he has in previous seasons. Tough to develop players if you don’t.
* Coming attraction: The guests on Thursday’s “Sports & Torts” at noon Central time on Talkzone.com will be Playboy’s November Playmate Gia Marie and former NFL defensive back Everson Walls. Podcast of the program, co-hosted by David Spada and Elliott Harris, will be available later Thursday at the Talkzone.com web site. And if you don’t want to listen to the show, you always can merely look at the photographs — although the program is highly rated (wwell, in the Spada and Harris households, as well as reportedly elsewhere) definitely is worth a listen as well as a look.
