With the prospect of slightly warmer weather approaching in the next few days, wondering whether the weather or the start of spring training will be provide more hope to some of us in making it through one of the most difficult winters in recorded history (the Ice Age wasn’t recorded, was it?).
* Speaking of hope, how good was it for Chicago Sky and WNBA fans to see Elena Delle Donne participate in the NBA’s all-star celebrity game Friday in New Orleans and score 11 points? It will be interesting to see how the 2013 rookie of the year will do in 2014 and how the Sky will do after an early exit in the first postseason appearance in franchise history.
* Speaking of basketball players with Chicago connections, Arne Duncan (20 points, 11 rebounds, six assists) received the MVP award in the celebrity game. Well, after two-time MVP Kevin Hart was voted the honor a third time by fans but the actor graciously gave the trophy to the Secretary of Education.
* If you were hoping for a real competitive contest during all-star weekend, the NBA would pit a squad of players from ESPN against one from TNT.
* Speaking of ESPN, the folks at ESPN.com must have heard from unhappy patrons about the web site’s change that had its city pages no longer visible on the front page. Those specific city pages have been returned to their rightful place at the top of the ESPN.com home page.
* February 15 is one of the best days of winter (which this year isn’t saying a whole lot) because you can get a head start on next year’s Valentine’s Day efforts. Or, in the case of some of us who from time to time have been accused of not quite being as romantic as we once were, it’s a good time to buy Valentine’s candy for half off. Hey, better late than … oh, never mind.
* Speaking of being slightly behind the times, a sincere thank you to all the fine folks who visit this site. For the month of January (as if January is something other than a month?), ElliottHarris.com averaged 34,852 hits per day and totaled 1,080,4303 for the month. Of course, the technological numerical analysis department around here has no idea what any of that means, so the hard-working employees (real and/or imagined) say it’s a good thing. Gullibility being one of my more endearing characteristics (hey, when you have so few, you’ll settle for just about anything), your humble correspondent is more than happy to believe them.
Here is where to go for a daily dose of non-gratuitous video (thanks to the editorial and video departments at ElliottHarris.com that do not know the meaning of taking a day off — and quite possibly don’t know the meaning of “gratuitous”):
