Cubs’ Attendance at Wrigley Takes a Hit

September 26, 2013 @ No Comments

Thursdy thoughts (or a reasonable facsimile): The Chicago Cubs appear to have concerns attendant to their pathetic performance on the field this season. Namely attendance. The team played its last home game of 2013. The crowd figure announced at Wrigley Field was 26,171. The Cubs’ season total at the ballpark: 2,642,682 — their lowest figure since 1998. So, apparently some fans were paying attention and staye away from Wrigley and went elsewhere to drink beer (or whatever other activity they decided on).d

* Speaking of Cubs and disappointing numbers, shortstop Starlin Castro committed two errors in the 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has 22 this season. If it’s any consolation to Cubs fns (and the guess here is that it won’t be), Castro is tied with Alexei Ramirez of the White Sox for the most by a shortstop this season.

* Speaking of attendance figures (well, we were a couple of paragraphs ago), the Sox have drawn 1,682,637 fans to U.S Cellular Field his season, good enough (OK, more like bad enough) to rank No. 24 among the 30 big-league teams. They average 22,139 fans per home game. If they hit those numbers for their season-ending series at The Cell, they will finish with 1,771,193 for a season total.

* If it’s any consolation to Sox fans (who indeed need consoling), the Tampa Bay Rays rank last home attendance (18,645). And that’s with a winning ballclub. OK, so that’s not much consolation.

* If today is Thursday (and the chances seem excellent in that yesterday was Wednesday – provided that you are reading this on Sept. 26, 2013, or a subsequent Thursday), then it is time once again for “Sports & Torts” at noon Central time on Talkzone.com with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris. The guests for the Sept. 26 show are two Pro Football Hall of Famers: Green Bay Packers great Jim Taylor and Detroit Lions standout Yale Lary. If you cannot tune in for the program, it will be available later in the day via podcast at Talkzone.com.

* Speaking of football, an informed source reports there will be no LFL Canada this season. Which, of course, means the photo department around here feels compelled to run a picture of an Australian Legends Football League (formerly Lingerie Football League) player. Hey, any reason works around here. As if there needs to be a reason.
