Midweek musings: When you’re hot, you’re hot. And the Chicago Cubs are that. Well, so are the rest of the folks in the Chicago area with 90-plus degree days this week. The Cubs certainly don’t seem to be sweating their crosstown rival Chicago White Sox in their three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field. The Cubs are on the cusp of quite likely the high point of their season. Possibly high points. A victory Wednesday (June 20) vs. the Sox would provide a series sweep. Thanks to a two-run single by David DeJesus off Jake Peavy and some impressive pitching — including a strong start by Travis Wood and a save by Carlos Marmol. As for an additional high point, the possible recall of first baseman Anthony Rizzo still is out there. Most Cubs fans have warmed up to that thought.

* By contrast, the Sox hit a low point in Tuesday’s loss. As far as attendance goes. The crowd of 30,282 was the lowest in crosstown series history. There are three basic reasons (well, probably more than that really) for any Sox attendance woes: 1. It’s too warm to go to a ballgame; 2. It’s too cold to go to a ball; 3. The weather is so nice that people go someplace else other than to a ballgame. Maybe the Sox need a climate change. Or change in fans’ mindset.
* Speaking of low points, Peavy has a right to be peeved about a lack of run support. He was beaten in his previous start 1-0 vs. the St. Louis Cardinals. On the bright (???) side, Peavy does lead the league in one category: losses while pitching a nine-inning complete game. He has two. His other was 1-0 to Boston on April 28.

* Speaking of pitchers, funnyman David Letterman — from his “Late Show” monologue Tuesday — on a former big-leaguer being acquitted of obstruction and lying to Congress: “Roger Clemens was found not guilty of lying to Congress. He was found guilty of looking guilty.”
* One more thing about the Cubs-Sox series. The Cubs are 20 games under .500 and so far back in the National League Central standings that they almost can see spring training for 2013. And they just knocked the Sox from first place in the American League East. But they couldn’t have accomplished that without the Cincinnati Reds — managed by former Cubs skipper Dusty Baker – blew a 2-1 lead in the 10th inning and lost to the Cleveland Indians on a two-run, walkoff home run.
