The Chicago Bears know who their quarterback of the future is. The same guy as the one of the recent past: Jay Cutler. What all parties concerned (and, yes, of course that includes fans) cannot be certain of is for how long. Cutler signed a seven-year contract. Which in NFL years means basically nothing — other than the first three are guaranteed, according to those who presumably know the terms of his deal. So to get too excited, outraged or anything else over the long term seems more than slightly premature. Given the way NFL contracts go, Cutler could become a case of premature evacuation.
* Speaking of Bears quarterbacks, general manager Phil Emery says they want Josh McCown — who certainly proved capable as a starter when Cutler was injured this season — back as backup. Which should make McCown feel good. At least until he finds out what the team’s contract offer to him might be.
* Still speaking of Bears quarterbacks, you can only hope Emery decides to draft a top talent at that position. Because developing quarterbacks is supposed to be one of coach Marc Trestman’s fortes (not to be confused with running back Matt Forte — or any other NFL-caliber running back who would tend to do well in a Trestman offense).
* Anyone — other than perhaps an NFL aficionado — who viewed the Chicago Bulls 94-82 victory over the Boston Celtics at the United Center had to wonder who were those guys in the green uniforms. Nondescript might be overstating the state of the Celtics, but not by much.
* Bulls center Joakim Noah missed a triple double by one assist that the team tried to get him late in the game. That missing assist speaks more to his teammates’ shooting ability (or lack therof) rather than his passing performance.
* Perhaps the best reason for the White Sox adding Scott Downs to their bullpen staff (other than the mere fact that he is left-handed) is to hear Hawk Harrelson or Ed Farmer or any other broadcaster say, “Downs up in the Sox bullpen.” Or “Downs no longer up in the Sox bullpen. Which is to say Downs down in the Sox ‘pen.”
* Speaking of baseball, the season will be in full swing in April. Speaking of April, the lovely April Rose once again is competing for a spot in Maxim Magazine’s Hot 100. In that she is one of our favorites, we are trying to provide her with some support, which she seems to need when not wearing much in the way of anything. The accompanying photo demonstrates how April does provide some support for herself. As for the contest, you can vote for her by clicking here. This is what we like to think of as a public service around here. And, yes, I always have to double-check the spelling of “public” for some reason.
