Goodness! Bulls’ Loss Had Plenty of Badness

February 5, 2015 @ No Comments

Thursday thoughts (OK, more like words thrown together, but you get the idea): It is so easy to become caught up in the game-by-game progress — or lack of it — by the Chicago Bulls in their quest for a seventh NBA title. Or at least a second-round postseason series. That said, what can you say about the team’s performance Wednesday at Houston? Well, other than it wasn’t good.

* Speaking of the Bulls’ 101-90 loss to the Rockets, it looked a lot like many of their other defeats this season: poor defense, poor shooting and poor imitation of a team that plays hard. Other than that …

* Still speaking of the Bulls, it’s easy to sit back (or lean forward or tilt to the side, if you’re so inclined or reclined) and criticize the team’s performance. Yeah, when the Bulls shoot 35 percent from the field — including Joakim Noah’s 0-for-8, Kirk Hinrich’s 1-for-6 and Nikola Mirotic’s 1-for-8 — there’s more than a little room for improvement.

* Speaking of Mirotic, he played a mere 12 minutes off the bench. Tony Snell, who had started some games recently, did not play. Neither did rookie Doug McDermott. Obviously coach Tom Thibodeau has a better handle on his personnel than does some guy watching at home (I mean watching from corporate headquarters of the ElliottHarris.com empire). At some point, he needs to give meaningful minutes to his younger players, regardless of how much pain it may cause him. Unless he’s not concerned with the future of the team beyond this season.

* Any similarity between Derrick Rose the NBA Most Valuable Player and Derrick Rose of the current Bulls is purely coincidental. Yes, he had 23 points (9-of-22 from the field, including 2-for-9 three-point attempts). He cut down his turnovers (three) but still had one more of those than he did assists (pretty sure that means he had two assists). The closest that Rose comes nowadays to MVP status is when the Bulls play a team with someone such as James Harden, who qualifies as a candidate in that category.

* Still trying to figure out exactly what day of the week it is (it has been that sort of week, thanks — not thank you — to a lingering malady; pretty sure it’s not malaria). Fairly certain that today is Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015. Mainly because yesterday was Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015. Well, it was, wasn’t it? Anyway, Thursday means it’s time for “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris at noon Central time on Talkzone.com. This week’s guests are former White Sox standout Harold Baines and former Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Roger Brown. Podcast of the show will be available later Thursday (and hopefully forever, if not longer) at the Talkzone.com website.
