Hazards of Duke — Mercer Scores Upset

March 22, 2014 @ No Comments

If the NCAA really wanted to present college basketball as something grand and glorious, it would institute a no-whining rule. Especially regarding coaches wandering the sidelines during games and chiding the officials.

For those who might be tired already of the NCAA basketball tourney (and even for those who aren't), this is Karen Kennedy.

* All the tears shed for No. 3 seed Duke losing to No. 14 seed Mercer — well, other than outside of the Blue Devils family and folks who had wagered on Duke advancing — would fill a thimble. A very small thimble.

* Speaking of Mercer, Gentleman Jim O’Donnell (like your humble correspondent a former employee of the downward spiraling Chicago Sun-Times) showed he still has his wits and wit about him by tweeting: Mercer upset biggest thing out of Macon, GA, since Allman Brothers.

* More O’Donnell (hey, it we are going to use other folks’ material, we like to make sure it is USDA prime cut): Downtown Fargo would have been on lockdown last night after No Dak St win had anyone still been there.

* If the NCAA basketball tournament teaches us anything, it is that it appears to be better to be a No. 12 seed than a No. 5 seed. Either that, or the seeding committee needs to step up its game. And, yes, Stephen F. Austin was a No. 12 seed and Virginia Commonwealth was a No. 5 with SFA prevailing 77-75 after a four-point play helped force overtime against VCU.

* Given all the upsets, the seeding-analysis department at ElliottHarris.com once again would like to lobby for a vastly superior method to what the NCAA employs in establishing its tournament brackets: Pick teams out of a hat and leave it at that.

* Sam Gilbert would be turning over in his grave (or possibly John Wooden’s) if he knew Steve Alford was the coach at once-proud UCLA. All you youngsters who do not understand this sentiment might want to do some background checking on Alford (something the Bruins apparently didn’t do — or at least didn’t do well) and Gilbert, a big booster during the Wooden era).

* The Chicago Bulls face the reeling Philadelphia 76ers, who have lost 23 games in a row, Saturday at the United Center. And, yes, a Bulls loss would be at least the equivalent of a No. 1 seed losing to a No. 16 seed in the NCAAA tourney.

* Maybe the folks at ESPN Chicago.com were distracted by March Madness or something, because this is what the headline was shortly after Jonathan Toews helped the Blackhawks prevail Friday at home against Carolina: Towes’ shorthanded goal powers Hawks The headline was corrected later. And, yes, this site has been known to have typos, too. But we don’t claim to be the worldwide leader in anything. Well, with the possible exception of non-gratuitous video.
