Devin Hester had many happy returns for the Chicago Bears. It appears the kick and punt returner extraordinaire will have no more. Well, not for the Bears. He posted on Facebook: “To all my Chicago people … I can’t thank you all enough for my time in Chicago. I’ve always said I wanted to retire a Chicago Bear but sometimes things don’t work out the way we would like. Chicago will always hold a special place in my heart and if I am fortunate enough to break the return record, we will have all broken it together … no matter where I am. Thank you again and God Bless.” The Bears confirmed Thursday that Hester will no longer be on the team. He has 13 punts returned for a touchdown, five kickoffs and one missed field goal. All that said (or at least typed), Gale Sayers has to remain the most exciting player the Bears ever have had on the field — in no small part because he was on the field more. Hester’s failed attempt to become a receiver was no match for Sayers’ success as a running back.
* Speaking of the Bears, Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to add 5,000 to Soldier Field. Because that’s one of the city’s more pressing problems. Well, not exactly. Hey, as long as he’s at it, maybe Emanuel can come up with a plan to put a dome on the place, too.
* Emanuel believes increasing seating at Soldier Field will attract more events. Of course, Emanuel’s plan still would leave Soldier Field short of the 70,000-seat requirement the NFL has for a Super Bowl site. And Chicago in February is such a desirable destination for tourists. Perhaps if you’re inside — and then only if you have layers of winter attire.
* Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah posted a triple-double in the team’s 105-94 victory in Detroit. He had 10 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. The triple-double was the sixth of his career with two coming in the last three games and three coming in the last month. Wondering whether there should be some sort of level of triple-doubles with his Wednesday effort low on the list. After all a triple-double has total 30 at the minimum — and Noah had 32. Something says the Bulls will settle for that.
* Speaking of the Bulls, it was Day 4 of the Jimmer Fredette Era with the Bulls. He did not miss a shot against the Pistons. OK, mainly because he did not get off the bench — except to leave his seat during timeouts so the players in the game could have a place to sit.
* If it’s Thursday (and the likelihood of that seem fairly good in that yesterday was Wednesday — provided that today is March 6, 2014, or a subsequent Thursday), then it is time for another edition of “Sports & Torts” at noon Central time on Talkzone.com with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris. The guests on the highly regarded interview show (well, it is held in such esteem in the Spada and Harris households as well as reportedly elsewhere) are one of our all-time favorites, April Rose, and former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver John Stallworth. Former Loop Rock Girl and Maxim Hometown Hotties winner April is set for the debut of her latest television project “Chicago Face Off,” a hockey-themed show that will premiere March 7 on Comcast SportsNet.
* Speaking of beautiful women, congratulations to Sara Sampaio for being named the Sports Illustrated swimsuit rookie of the year. And, yes, this mention serves as a reason to run some video of her. Not that any justification is necessary around here.
Here is where to go for a daily dose of non-gratuitous video (thanks to the editorial and video departments at ElliottHarris.com):
