Hits & Misses: Bulls, Hawks, Sox and more

April 19, 2012 @ No Comments

Thursday thoughts: Without reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Derrick Rose and all-star Luol Deng, the Chicago Bulls defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 100-68 Wednesday (April 18). Bring on the playoffs. Well, as long as teams the caliber of the Bobcats are the opposition.

Figure competitor Chaya Boone is preparing for more contests.

* The National Hockey League has suspended Raffi Torres of the Phoenix Coyotes indefinitely for the hit on Chicago Blackhawks standout Marian Hossa in Game 3 of the opening-round playoff series. If the league really wants to curtail such violence (and the guess here is that the NHL really doesn’t want to), it also would have suspended indefinitely the officials involved in not calling a penalty on the play.

* Gordon Beckham and Adam Dunn with basehits and runs batted in in the same game for the Chicago White Sox? You mean this season? Yes, it happened Wednesday in an 8-1 victory vs. the visiting Baltimore Orioles. And, yes, that was Beckham’s first RBI of the season.

* You know you’re having a bad start to the baseball season when you have as many errors as you do runs batted in. To be fair, Sox third baseman Brent Morel did have two RBI before he did two errors (the second coming Wednesday).

* Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said after his team’s 9-1 loss to the Marlins in Miami he thought starting pitcher Matt Garza’s velocity was better than in previous outings this season. Well, the homers Garza allowed to Donnie Murphy and Hanley Ramirez sure did leave the playing field quickly.

* Former White Sox left-hander Mark Buehrle

* Speaking of former Sox pitchers, right-hander Bartolo Colon threw 38 consecutive pitches for strikes in the Oakland A’s 6-0 victory vs. the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. Not sure whether that streak is more unexpected than his eight scoreless innings with four hits, five strikeouts and no walks for a 3-1 record this season.

Yours truly spent some quality time with a personal trainer Wednesday at HiFi Fitness in downtown Chicago. Maybe next time at least one of us will exercise. Thank you to Chaya Boone, who is also a figure competitor, for taking time to chat before she had to depart for an appointment with a client.

Speaking of fitness (and figure and bikini) competitions, the Chi-Town Showdown — promoted by Joe and Heather Perez — will be May 19 at Bolingbrook (Ill.) High. For more about the NABBA event, click here.

It's fitness expert Hadley Allen with Elliott Harris. What some of us like to think of as work.

Still speaking of fitness and things like that (and lamenting that osmosis fails to work when hanging around such people), thank you to fitness personality Andrea Metcalf for a fun time later in the evening at Rockit Bar & Grill in Wrigleyville for a screening of the finale of her “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is” television show that airs on NBC Nonstop Saturdays and Sundays. The show chronicles 12-week, weight-loss journeys that had trainers working with clients to achieve their goals. Among the trainers was Hadley Allen — who, like Andrea, is a former guest on “Sports & Torts.” Always fun to be with Hadley.

Speaking of “Sports & Torts,” co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris are scheduled to have Kimberly Anderson of the Lingerie Football League’s Chicago Bliss and author Robert Kurson on the show Thursday (April 19). The program airs live on talkzone.com at noon Chicago time and subsequently is available on podcast.
