Horse Racing, Boxing Face Challenges

June 11, 2012 @ No Comments

Monday meanderings: Still trying to figure out which sport suffered more Saturday (June 9) — boxing or horse racing. With I’ll Have Another calling it a career Friday because of a tendon problem, the Belmont Stakes lost the luster of having a possible Triple Crown winner for the first time since 1978. With Manny Pacquiao losing a highly unpopular, highly disputed split decision — and his welterweight title — to Timothy Bradley, boxing endured another black eye.

There's always room for Chicago Luvabulls dancers around here. This is Jackie.

* Given the popularity of mixed martial arts, boxing never may return to its glory days, Bradley’s victory sets up a rematch, which should suit everyone’s pocket books — with the possible exception of the viewing public.

* As for horse racing, it needs something to make sure there will be a viewing public. If the answer to horse racing’s woes is having slot machines at racetracks, then you have to wonder what the question is. Casino gambling at racetracks is like attractions/distractions at sporting events: They may make for a better experience, but they are no guarantee of an improved, championship-caliber team.

* Someone ought to remind Chicago White Sox right-hander Philip Humber that pitching a perfect game counts as only one victory. Since he threw a perfect game on April 21 in Seattle, he is 1-4 with a 7.50 earned-run average. If he’s not careful, he will earn his way out of the Sox rotation. Latest exhibit came Sunday in an 11-9 home loss to the Houston Astros. Humber is without a victory in his last 14 home starts, which dates to June 11, 2011. He can now claim the team record in the modern era for longest winless streak. If he’s not careful, he’ll claim a ticket to the bullpen — or to the minors.

* Speaking of reversals of fortune, Chicago Cubs right-hander Ryan Dempster went eight innings in an 8-2 victory at Minnesota. Dempster has allowed two runs or fewer in eight of 11 starts and has gone at least six innings 10 times. He won two games in a week after going 18 starts without a victory. His scoreless streak is at 15 innings. He may be too good for a woeful Cubs club not to trade him. Which would be too bad — for the team, not necessarily for Dempster.

* When some people thought Brent Morel could be the next Joe Crede at third base for the White Sox, they probably didn’t mean he would suffer back problems that coould prematurely end his career.

* The visiting Chicago Sky defeated the New York Liberty 73-64 Sunday. As has been the case the three previous games, Epiphanny Price led the Sky with 26 points — ending a streak of three 30-point-plus games. What truly was surprising for the Sky (6-1), which is off to the best start in franchise history, is the team had only 10 turnovers. It had been averaging 21.3 per game. * Speaking of basketball and females, the Chicago Luvabulls will continue to be a postseason presence, even if the Bulls no longer are. Today we are pleased to feature Jackie, who was a rookie this season. To check out her video, you can click here.
