‘Indefinitely’ a Definite Challenge for Bulls, Rose

November 24, 2013 @ No Comments

Sunday smorgasbord: The news Saturday regarding Derrick Rose was the Chicago Bulls star has a torn meniscus in his right knee that will require surgery. The bad news: He may miss the rest of the season. The good (?) news: He has run out of knees to injure.

* OK, so Rose’s resurrected left knee survived surgery and rehabilitation to the point that he was playing this season after sitting out the 2012-13 campaign. His most recent injury is not deemed as serious. About all that is certain right now regarding Rose, hs surgery and his return to action? Uncertainty. And that certainly cannot be much comfort to the Bulls, their fans and, of course, ticket brokers hoping to cash in on his presence this season at United Center games.

* Rose is out indefinitely, the team says. Something says when the duration becomes more definite, hopes for seeing him on the court any time soon definitely will be greatly diminished.

* Speaking of diminished, think of this season as being similar to last season (without the prospect of an immediate Rose return): The NBA’s Eastern Conference has two top teams — neither of which is the Bulls. And would not have been the Bulls, even with a healthy Rose. The defending champion Miami Heat and the Indiana Pacers are the class of the East. After that, there isn’t much, so the Bulls have every reason to believe they can reach the postseason. Well, for a round, possibly two.

* The upside to the Bulls not having Rose is they likely will have a worse record than they would have with him (of course, this is pure conjecture, but realistic nonetheless). Which means they will have a better draft pick. Yeah, didn’t think that would console too many distraught Bulls fans, but it’s the best we can come up with on short notice.

* With Rose out indefinitely and Jimmy Butler out with turf toe that will sideline him for the Bulls’ circus trip (and possibly longer), it just might be time to send in Marquis Teague and/or rookie Tony Snell for increased playing time. Either that, or send in the clowns.

* Speaking of clowns, Bears fans who think quarterback Jay Cutler’s injury is more important to his team than Rose’s is to his do not fully grasp the reality that football is different from basketball.

* Speaking of the Bears, anyone who thinks a mention of them is the reason we are running a photo of a St. Louis Rams cheerleader (the Bears do play Sunday at St. Louis) does not fully grasp the reality that we can run just about anything we want whenever we want. So rationalizing using a picture is not necessary. Looking through dozens of photos before selection one, however, is mandatory. What some of us call work.
