Last Dance: Bulls to Say Farewell to Matadors

June 15, 2012 @ No Comments

It’s not every day that this site is able to provide such big news as what is about to follow. Few sites or other media outlets can. It concerns the NBA and has nothing to do with the Miami Heat defeating the host Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Thursday (June 14) to tie the series 1-1.

A photo of Chicago Luvabulls dancer Kelley or one of the Chicago Bulls Matadors male dance troupe? Sorry, guys.

It has something to do with the Chicago Bulls and the team’s level of entertainment for next season. It has something to do with personnel but not as far as basketball players are concerned (this site will leave any trade suggestions to the venerable Sam Smith, who does a phenomenol job of covering the Bulls on the team’s site, Bulls.com).

OK, enough already. So what’s the big deal?

The Matadors.

You can’t get much larger than the larger-than-life male dance troupe. The Matadors apparently have taken their last dance as a part of the Bulls franchise. A source close to the situation said the Bulls are going a different direction and are to make an announcement Friday (June 15).

This is not a situation to be taken lightly. Especially in terms of heavyweight talent.

It’s unclear what the future of the Matadors — or whatever name the dancers may use — might be. To say they are weighing their options would seem a reasonable observation.

All this reporter knows is not having the Matadors around will be a huge loss — in more than terms of heft. These guys were/are sizable talents. OK, maybe supersized is a more fitting adjective. But you get the idea. Good luck to all parties.

As an homage to the Matadors, it seems only reasonable to run some video. To see Chicago Luvabulls rookie Kelley, you can click here.

OK, we might as well run some of the Matadors, too.

OK, and as further tribute, how about a little “Last Dance” from the late Donna Summer:

And a little “Save the Last Dance for Me” video, too:

Illustration by Mark Ben Harris (who also happens to be part of the story that appears at chicagosidesports.com).

From the ElliottHarris.com department of shameless self-promotion comes this news: It is with great pleasure that I can say the first article that I have written for Chicagosidesports.com is ready for perusal. It is a pleasure to join some of the other writers whose work has graced the new site. Among them, Robert Kurson, Jonathan Eig (the site’s co-founder and editor-in-chief), James Finn Garner, Bill Savage and Dan McGrath, to name a few.

The Chicagoside article does not include gratuitous photos. The accompanying illustration by artist Mark Ben Harris (who plays a key part in the story) may provide an idea of what the article is about (hint: Sunday is Father’s Day). Anyway, as far as recommended reading goes, you will find it a little different than the fare you encounter around here on a daily basis. For those who take the time to check it out, here’s hoping you enjoy it.

Posing for a photo with Love in the Wild star Yanina Beccaria is what some of us like to think of as work.

Speaking of self-promotion (shameless and otherwise), the June 14 edition of “Sports & Torts” with David Spada and Elliott Harris is available. As usual, the show is worth a look — if for no other reason than it includes an interview with Yanina Beccaria. Yanina is one of the stars of the NBC television reality/dating series “Love in the Wild” that Chicago native Jenny McCarthy hosts. Chicago resident Yanina is a former member of the Chicago Blackhawks Ice Crew (in case you were thinking you might have seen her somewhere before).

Also on the show is former football star and broadcaster Frank Gifford. His segment provides one of the most amusing, spontaneous moments in “Sports & Torts” history (which goes all the way back to the early days of 2011). Gifford was speaking on his cell phone after he pulled his car over. During the interview, a policeman comes over to Gifford, who explains he is doing a phone interview and hands the phone to the officer. Thankfully, the officer let Gifford continue his conversation. Gifford was a great guest, as was Yanina.

“Sports & Torts” airs Thursdays at noon on talkzone.com. To check out the June 14 show, you can click here. Persons interested in being part of the program by becoming an advertiser on the show may contact david@injuryinillinois.com.

And for those looking for something of a gratuitous nature (although with the U.S. Open golf tournament going on, this does fit in with that, no?), how about this:
