Masters Without Tiger Could Be Pain in the Grass

April 2, 2014 @ No Comments

Midweek musings: Tiger Woods will not compete in the Masters golf tournament. Instead he will be recovering from back surgery that he had Monday. Which means for some of us there will be more time for some spring lawn care rather than sitting on the couch, watching some golf on television and admiring the green grass at Augusta National.

* Signing pitcher Joel Piniero, 35, to a minor-league contract is a shrewd move by the Chicago Cubs. If for no other reason than Piniero, who has not pitched in the major leagues since 2011, likely will be an AARP member by the time the Cubs are pennant contenders and if he’s still with the team if/when that happens, he might be able to get movie-ticket discounts for the entire team.

* Ex-Cub(s) of the day: Former Cubs pitcher Scott Feldman was the winning pitcher as the Houston Astros defeated the visiting New York Yankees 6-2 in the season opener for both teams. Well, that’ll teach Yankees manager/former Cubs catcher Joe Girardi to pass on the opportunity to manage the Cubs when the job became open after the 2013 season. OK, something says Girardi won’t regret his decision any time soon.

* More than one Chicago media member seemed impressed with Bears defensive end Jared Allen’s introductory press conference Monday. From talking more in his media gathering than predecessor Julius Peppers did in four years (and that’s relevant exactly how?) to the words Allen uttered. If memory serves (and occasionally it does), the Bears signed him for their football team. Unless there’s a debate team the McCaskey family also owns. So all the talk — which would be considered bluster if it had come from a Bears rival — means very, very little (if that much).

* And Allen said he chose the Bears over the Seattle Seahawks. As in the Super Bowl champions for the 2013 season. Because the chance of repeating with Seattle is worse than the chance of winning one with a team that didn’t reach the postseason in 2013 is better? Then again, maybe Allen has far greater vision and insight than that of mere mortals.

* If it’s Wednesday (which seems reasonable because yesterday was Tuesday — provided that today is April 2, 2014, or a subsequent Wednesday), then it is almost time for Thursday’s weekly edition of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris at noon Central time on Talkzone.com. If things go according to plan (which they occasionally do), the guests on the show will be April Playboy Playmate Shanice Jordyn and former Seattle Seahawks offensive tackle Walter Jones, who is scheduled to be inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August in Canton, Ohio. The program will be available via podcast later Thursday at the Talkzone.com web site.
