Melo to Bulls Seems an Unlikely Option

March 9, 2014 @ No Comments

Sunday smorgasbord: The Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat square off in a Sunday afternoon game on national television. So, of course, a major focus will be on Carmelo Anthony. Yes, he plays for the New York Knicks. But he could become a free-agent acquisition for next season. And if the theory is Anthony wants to win an NBA championship, would he really opt for the Bulls (with guard Derrick Rose ready to return from injury next season in search of his first title, too) over the Heat (with LeBron James, who already has won championships). And would he really opt for an NBA title over money?

* Speaking of the Knicks, ESPN reported Saturday Phil Jackson is leaning toward running the team as president of basketball operations. It is unclear whether Jackson — who coached the Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers Lakers to 11 NBA titles — would coach the Knicks. Unlikely, but you never know.

* Speaking of changes, there’s nothing quite like being up at 1:59 a.m. and see the laptop clock turn to 3 a.m. as the time change to Daylight Saving Time hits. That surely was the quickest hour of sleep lost in some time. On the bright side, we will be able to fall back on November 2. And it will still feel like losing an hour of sleep.

* Speaking of Jackson (who has coached three of basketball’s all-time greats in Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal — and some might include a fourth in Scottie Pippen), you have to wonder whether he might consider a return to coach if the opportunity involved James. Well, on a team other than the Heat.

* Speaking of King James, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau had nothing but praise for him Saturday. Asked if there was any player he has seen or coached against in recent years like LeBron, Thibodeau said, “Nobody. Because you’re combining the speed, the power, the skills, the passing, the vision. I can’t recall anyone that I’ve coached against that’s like that. There’s nothing that he doesn’t do. He’s great with the ball, great without the ball, can post, can drive, can shoot, can really pass. If you over-commit to him, he’s going to make you really pay. He keeps getting better every year. So he’s an all-time great.”

* The thought of James possibly returning to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers is nothing if not somewhat heart-warming — for Cavs fans. The reality is any team with James should be in title contention. And James can control his own destiny (in terms of what team he plays for, if not single-handedly win another title).
