Midweek musings: Hector Noesi won his first game as a starter since May 6, 2012, in the Chicago White Sox’ 4-1 victory Tuesday over the Dodgers in Los Angeles. He had been 0-12 in 19 starts since his triumph with the Seattle Mariners. Speaking of events that occurred on Tuesday, Crystal Hefner (wife of Playboy’s Hugh Hefner) followed me on Twitter; plus I interviewed 2014 Playboy Playmate of the Year Kennedy Summers for “Sports & Torts” (more about that later in today’s offering). I have to believe that even some Sox fans would agree I had the better day.
* Speaking of the Sox, Jose Abreu hit a two-run home run in the first inning, thereby allowing some fans to go to bed with the thought the Sox actually would win a game in L.A. in which he homers (unlike Monday’s losing effort). And they would wake up to find out their team indeed did win. Not a bad way to start the day. Still not as good as a day that includes Crystal Hefner and Kennedy Summers.
* Speaking of Abreu, with 17 homers and 47 runs batted in in the team’s first 60 games (and his first 46 — limited because of injury), the rookie slugger is on pace to finish with 50-plus homers and about 150 RBI if he remains healthy and similarly productive. Well, that’s how the statistical-analysis department at ElliottHarris.com calculated it (and you have no idea how many people had to take off their shoes so we could count using toes to arrive at those numbers.
* The Sox (30-30) are on pace to finish .500. Which would leave them at 81-81 and not in the postseason.
* Speaking of season records, after their 2-1 victory vs. the New York Mets at Wrigley Field, the Cubs (the team with the worst record — 21-34 — in the major leagues) are on pace to finish 61-101.
* Speaking of the Cubs and numbers, WBBM and the team are expected to announce a seven-year radio deal that begins in 2015. Meaning WGN, which has aired the team’s games since 1924, will have a lot more programming time to fill. And WSCR, which broadcasts White Sox games, presumably will have some leverage in talks with the team about a new radio deal that is set to expire after the 2015 season. CBS owns WSCR and WBBM for those looking to connect some dots.
* Speaking of impressive figures (of another variety), the previously mentioned Kennedy Summers will be on Thursday’s edition of “Sports & Torts” at noon Central time with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris on Talkzone.com. Also on the show will be former NFL standouts Chuck Howley (former Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys linebacker) and Aeneas Williams (former Arizona Cardinals and St. Louis Rams defensive back, who is a 2014 inductee to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August in Canton, Ohio).
