Back by popular demand (as always, the demand is to do this only once a year), it’s the 14th annual version of Holiday Tunes. The first 11 came as part of the Chicago Sun-Times Quick Hits column that I once wrote. For those who prefer, feel free to think of this as the third annual ElliottHarris.com “Songs of the Season” or whatever you’d like to call it.
Because Christmas once again falls on Dec. 25 this year, the editorial staff at ElliottHarris.com thought (which is something of a rarity, no?) today would be as good as any to run some merry melodies. By doing so, you will have them for Christmas Eve gatherings, Christmas Day gatherings, (yes, a little late for Chanukah, which came early this year), etc. Once upon a time, the printed newspaper version also was suitable for holiday gift wrap. In a way, this is an environmentally, more friendly form of delivery.
Without further ado (although I admit to having used “adieu” on occasion), happy holidays (any and all) to you:
Playoff boasting, Bears and Packers style,
Comes down to Week 17.
A great chance to bring Bears fans big smiles
They know what a tie/win will mean.
Everybody knows a QB and some
Missle throws help to make the season bright
Diehard fans with their sighs for defense
Will find it hard to sleep Sat. night.
They know that Green Bay’s on its way
Heading to Soldier Field for one last game to play.
And every faithful fan is going to see
Whether the postseason is going to be.
And so we’re offering this simple phrase,
For fans from 1 to 92.
Although it’s been said many times
Many ways, “Da Bears football to you.”
Marc from Canada is here,
Time to grab me one more beer
This new coach name of Trestman,
Was he really the best man?
Joyful, all we Bears fans were
Offense whiz caused quite a stir.
Who could know that his play-calling
Would turn out to be so galling?
Marc from Canada is here,
Time to grab a lot more beer.
I’m dreaming tonight of a place I love
Even more than I usually do
And although I know it’s a long rehab back
I promise you:
I’ll be home on Christmas
You can count on me
Bulls and Nets, I’ll watch, you bet
On my flat-screen TV.
Injured once more, that’s me
Sidelined, so it seems
I’ll play ball on Christmas
If only in my dreams.
Tom Thibodeau, Tom Thibodeau,
Your coaching does delight us.
Tom Thibodeau, Tom Thibodeau,
Your coaching does ignite us.
Your strategy – second to none
Even if it’s sometimes not fun.
Tom Thibodeau, Tom Thibodeau,
Your coaching does delight us.
Tom Thibodeau, Tom Thibodeau,
You are a coaching treasure.
Tom Thibodeau, Tom Thibodeau,
We hear there’s some displeasure.
And now it seems the grumblings grow
We fear it may be time to go
Tom Thibodeau, Tom Thibodeau,
You are a coaching treasure.
Tom Thibodeau, Tom Thibodeau,
There may be strained relations.
Tom Thibodeau, Tom Thibodeau,
Does everyone lack patience?
Each game to you is a must-win
Even though our roster’s so thin.
Tom Thibodeau, Thibodeau,
We hope you don’t have to go.
Please come all ye Cubs fans
Not yet quite triumphant
O come ye, O come ye
To Wrigley Field
Come and behold it,
Ivy-covered walls!
Please come, let us adore it,
Please come, let us adore it.
Such fun, let us adore it,
Wrigley Field.
Sing, seventh inning
So we’re not yet winning
O sing, all ye faithful fans in our ballpark
It sells the tickets
It’s good to be a Ricketts
Please come, let us adore it,
Please come, let us adore it.
Such fun, let us adore it,
Wrigley Field.
Please come, all ye faithful
Who need be triumphant?
O come, O come ye
To Wrigley Field.
Come and behold it.
100 years old.
Please come, let us adore it,
Please come, let us adore it.
Such fun, let us adore it,
Wrigley Field.
Theo’s the man, he has a plan;
Just let him do his thing;
96 losses are OK with his bosses.
Much to most Cubs fans’ chagrin.
Much to most Cubs fans’ chagrin
When, oh, when will they ever win?
Joy to the Cubs? Are they this dumb?
Theo can build a team?
Indeed Anthony Rizzo
Is surely a true whiz, oh!
What about front-line pitching
What about front-line pitching?
The true cause of our bitching.
Should injuries be all forgot
And never come to mind?
You have to think Phil Emery
Will not be so blind.
Jay’ll be just fine, my dear,
He’ll be just fine.
High ankle sprain, oh what a pair.
Jay’ll be just fine.
Will Cutler be around next year
In jersey No. 6?
You want a QB who throws
Way too many picks?
Jay’ll be just fine, my dear,
He’ll be just fine.
Time to go? Maybe so.
Bears’ll be just fine.
God bless ye, Jerry’s gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Konerko back in ‘14
Surely does make our day.
To have a farewell tour for Paulie,
Plan one without delay.
Sox tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy,
Sox tidings of comfort and joy.
We wish you a Blackhawks Christmas,
We wish you a Blackhawks Christmas,
We wish you a Blackhawks Christmas and a Stanley Cup, too.
Goal tidings we bring, we’re leading the league.
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Stanley Cup, too.
Now, please bring us a Cup repeat,
Now, please bring us a Cup repeat,
Now, please bring us a Cup repeat, and we all will cheer.
Goal tidings we bring, we’re leading the league.
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Stanley Cup year.
Passing the football
On a well-conceived play
Down the field this fall
Sprinting all the way.
Balls that QBs zing
Much to their delight
When this receiver does his thing
Completion! What delight!!
Throw the ball,
Throw the ball
Alshon Jeffery’s way.
Oh, what fun it is to watch
Him perform on passing plays
Throw the ball,
Throw the ball
Alshon Jeffery’s way
I certainly need his stats
To be a winner today.
(The ever-popular classic, to ”Dreidel” by a Chicagoland chorus of pro sports teams’ fans – with the exception of Blackhawks fans)
We preach a little wait’ll,
Whenever our teams play;
And when they’re good and ready,
Then ”wait’ll,” we won’t say.
Wait’ll, wait’ll, wait’ll
Oh ”wait’ll’,’ we must say;
Wait’ll, wait’ll, wait’ll,
Next year is on the way.
Here is where to go for daily dose of non-gratuitous video (thanks to the enlightened efforts of the editorial and video departments at ElliottHarris.com). Today has some Christmas tunes — with more to come on Dec. 25 — as well as what most people generally expect to see around here:
