Peavy Performance Leads to Royals Victory

October 23, 2014 @ No Comments

Thursday thoughts (or reasonable facsimiles thereof): Jake Peavy pitches pretty well for five or so innings. He falters. The bullpen comes in and fails to do its job. Peavy takes the loss. So was that a World Series game Wednesday night or some sort of early Halloween prank with the San Francisco Giants playing the role of the Chicago White Sox?

* Speaking of Peavy. he had limited Kansas City to two runs through five innings before the first two batters reached in the sixth. He exited, and the Royals ended up having a five-run inning. On the bright (?) side for Peavy, he threw only 66 pitches in the Giants’ 7-2 loss.

* What’s probably most amazing about the Wrigley Field renovation is not that it is proceeding smoothly but that some of the demolition debris from the project ended up in a trash bin and not somewhere secure where the ballclub could have taken bleacher benches or bricks or whatever and sold them as memorabilia to its diehard fans. Gotta maximize the ballpark any way you can, if you’re the Ricketts family.

* Speaking of baseball, one of the benefits of being slightly hard of hearing is missing out on everything that Harold Reynolds had to say on the Fox telecast of Game 2 of the World Series. Seems like some folks on social media paid close attention to him (and apparently didn’t like him). Guess it’s a dirty job, but somebody’s gotta do it. And, no, I won’t use closed captioning to capture his words. See what happens when Tim McCarver no longer is around in the Fox broadcast booth?

* Speaking of missing someone, the Chicago Bulls may be without Jimmy Butler (strained ligaments in his left thumb) for their regular-season opener Oct. 29 in New York. Meaning who among the remaining Bulls will coach Tom Thibodeau employ for more than 40 minutes against the Knicks?

* If it’s Thursday (and the chance of that seems overwhelming in that yesterday was Wednesday — provided that today is Oct. 23, 2014, or a subsequent Thursday), then it is time for another edition of “Sports & Torts” co-hosted by David Spada and Elliott Harris. The highly acclaimed (certainly in the Spada and Harris households, as well as reportedly elsewhere) program airs on Talkzone.com at noon Central time. This week’s guests are former college football coaches Lou Holtz and Bobby Bowden. Replay of the show will be available later Thursday on the Talkzone.com web site.
