Random thoughts (or as close to them as we come around here) while wondering whether Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford or Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler makes more ill-advised passes.
* Speaking of the Lions (who lost to the visiting Baltimore Ravens 18-16 Monday night on a 61-yard field goal by Justin Tucker), they did hold their opponent without a touchdown. Surely that’s something the Bears would be thrilled to achieve. Well, as long as it came in a victory.
* Speaking of the Bears who find themselves in first place in the NFC North, all they have to do to stay there and reach the postseason is win their last two regular-season games. So simple, isn’t it? Certainly far simply than actually prevailing at Philadelphia against the Eagles and at home against Green Bay.
* If the Bears season had any more ups and downs, it would be a ride at Great America.
* Linebacker Lance Briggs, who has been sidelined by a shoulder injury, is expected back at Bears practice this week. His presence on the field would be a big help for the defense. Well, as long as the Bears could have him in addition to the 11 defensive players on the field. Yes, the Bears’ defense has been that bad. In case you haven’t noticed.
* The Chicago Bulls lost 83-82 at home to the Orlando Magic (8-17). Luol Deng had 26 points for the Bulls (9-14). The Bulls have shown they can win with Deng. They have shown they can lose with Deng. At some point this season, they quite likely will show they can exist without him by dealing him for what likely at best will be hope for a better Bulls team some other season.
* Speaking of deals, the Chicago White Sox traded Addison Reed to the Arizona Diamondbacks for third baseman Matt Davidson. Because the Sox don’t figure to have many games to save? Or maybe they have the closer role already figured out before spring training.
* Speaking of the Bulls (which we were a paragraph or so ago), Taj Gibson was 1-for-7 from the field with the basket a dunk. As bad as his offensive effort might have been, at least it was better than teammate Jimmy Butler (1-for-11 from the field). In case anyone was wondering why the Bulls have trouble winning.
* On the bright side for the Bulls, guard D.J. Augustin did have 14 points off the bench. With Derrick Rose out for the season and Kirk Hinrich suffering from a back injury and Marquis Teague not playing well, look for Augustin to see more playing time. Not that Bulls fans necessarily will see substantially more victories.
* On the bright side for Bulls fans, there is some video of the Luvabulls. Maybe that will be sufficient distraction from the basketball action:
