Weekend wondering: With center Joakim Noah set to sit out the Chicago Bulls’ exhibition opener Saturday night against the host Indiana Pacers because of a groin issue (whatever that means), you have to wonder whether that is a good sign that coach Tom Thibodeau is more concerned about the regular season or whether that is a bad sign that Noah’s durability might be a question almost as much as any regarding guard Derrick Rose.
* Speaking of Rose and his return to the court after about 18 months recovering from knee surgery, you have to wonder how loud the gasp will be among Bulls fans and/or front-office types the first time he hits the floor during a game. And whether Bulls officials will carry around their own personal defibrillators.
* Still speaking of Rose, wondering whether there’s a better reason to have the NBA Network than to be able to see the Bulls-Pacers telecast on that network.
* Speaking of television and sports, you have to wonder what would hold more appeal for Joe Giraradi if he rejects the New York Yankees’ offer to return as manager: another team to run or going to the broadcast booth for a season or so before returning to the field. TV might not pay as well, but it does allow for more family time.
* Speaking of Girardi, if he is Plan A for the Cubs in their search for a manager to replace Dale Sveum, you have to wonder how many letters in the alphabet the front office might have in play if he decides to re-sign with the Yankees.
* Speaking of managerial maneuvering, with the Cincinnati Reds firing manager Dusty Baker after the team reached the postseason (well, one game that it lost to Pittsburgh in a wild-card contest that is prelude to the real playoffs), tou have to wonder where the former Cubs skipper will end up — other than possibly taking a tour of a toothpick factory.
* Also wondering how managers came to be called “skipper.” But that’s probably another story for another day. Guessing that the derivation does not include some manager who would skip around the ballpark or to the mound to make a pitching change.
* Still speaking about the Reds managing vacancy, wondering whether Reds fans — or Cubs fans — would be more excited if Cincinnati hired former Cubs manager Jim Riggleman, who guided Cincinnati’s Class AAA Louisville team last season.
* Speaking of the postseason, in a best-of-five series with each team having won one game, you don’t have to wonder whether Game 3 is the most important. It definitely is. Well, until Game 4.
* Speaking of big games, wondering whether it matters whether Northwestern’s football team beats Ohio State on Saturday night or whether merely having ESPN come to campus in Evanston is reason enough for purple-clad school officials to pat one another on the back.
