Random thoughts (or what passes for such around here) while wondering how long the 24-hour flu is supposed to last:
* Also wondering how big a shot in the arm to the team’s cap space is the reported restructuring of quarterback Jay Cutler’s contract might be. About $4 million is the number. And how exactly is that going to help the Bears?
* Speaking of shots in the arm (or elsewhere), here’s hoping the restructuring includes a promise that Cutler and Kristin Cavallari will have their children vaccinated. Cavallari is an anti-vaccine advocate because of fears — generally considered ill-founded (and that’s putting it nicely) — of autism resulting from vaccinations. Can’t wait for an epidemic of whooping cough to sweep through the Bears locker room.
* Speaking of the Bears, they reportedly would like to honor former linebacker Brian Urlacher, who has been critical of the team ever since it did not bring him back for the 2013 season. Maybe festivities will include a muzzle. Or perhaps bunches of sour grapes.
* The Chicago Bulls’ 89-77 victory Monday against the visiting Indiana Pacers kept Indiana from clinching the Eastern Conference title. Which means the Pacers can do so if they win at home Wednesday. Against the Miami Heat. Which certainly would be more satisfying for the Pacers — and their fans — than a victory over the Bulls. Conspiracy theorists, please take note (as if you haven’t done so already).
* For those thinking Bulls forward Taj Gibson merits consideration for Sixth Man of the Year award, they will point to games such as Monday’s when he went 9-for-15 from the field and had a team-high 23 points. If he did that on a regular basis (rather than have games in which he is ineffective — and there have been some this season), he actually might win the award.
* The White Sox signed left-hander Jose Quintana to a five-year contract. Apparently the Sox think he is better than his 16.36 earned-run average (20 runs in 11 innings) in March. If it’s any consolation to Sox fans and/or management, he was an American League leader in 2013. OK, so it was no decisions with 17. But considering the Sox’ season, that might have been one of the few highlights.
