Random thoughts (well, about as close to such things as we will find around here) while waiting for the World Series to begin:
* The Chicago Bulls lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers 107-98 Monday night in a preseason game at Columbus, Ohio. Derrick Rose led the Bulls with 30 points on 12-of-18 shooting (4-of-5 three-pointers). More impressive was he logged 24 minutes in the second of back-to-back games and lived to tell about it. The true test will come in the regular season, especially when coach Tom Thibodeau might be inclined to give Rose more minutes.
* LeBron James had 18 points for the Cavaliers in 32 minutes — and sat out the final 6:29. Just guessing that won’t happen much against the Bulls during the regular season or postseason — unless the game is a blowout.
* Chicago Bears offensive guard Kyle Long, who criticized fans for booing and not making more noise on third downs Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, apologized Monday. Someone ought to tell him once the words leave his mouth, they cannot be unsaid.
* Bears coach Marc Trestman said of a possible rift between Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall after the receiver reportedly criticized the quarterback in a postgame locker room rant: “I don’t see it at all.” Kinda like the way Cutler doesn’t see defensive players on some of his passes.
* Unsurprisingly, White Sox slugger Jose Abreu was named Sporting News American League Rookie of the Year. He received 147 of 160 votes. Surprisingly, Sox teammate Marcus Semien received a vote.
* From the ElliottHarris.com Department of Stupidity (one of the larger departments around here, but don’t tell anyone that): Two radio stations in San Francisco say they won’t play “Royals” by New Zealand performer Lorde while the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals is ongoing. A Kansas City radio station said it would play the tune from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday (the Fall Classic is scheduled to begin Tuesday in K.C.). The singer has said a picture of George Brett in his Royals uniform signing autographs inspired her. Not sure what inspired the radio folks in San Francisco. Thinking we will stick with stupidity. You can find the music video below to see how incendiary it might be to Giants fans.
* Speaking of the World Series, the fine folks at Bovada, (www.Bovada.lv, Twitter: @BovadaLV) have provided some more Fall Classic numbers (purely for entertainment purposes, I suppose — but again a remind if you happen to make a fortune from any of the following, might we suggest a contribution to the ElliottHarris.com survival foundation? OK, probably not.):
