The Chicago Bears announced on the day after Christmas (pretty sure that means Friday because Xmas was on Thursday in 2014) signing Roberto Garza to a contract extension through the 2015 season. Meaning quarterback Jay Cutler will have a familiar face on the offensive line in 2015 (assuming he is back, which seems a fairly safe assumption). Although when Garza lines up at center, Cutler might be looking at a more familiar part of his anatomy other than Garza’s face. Yeah, we’re talking about assumptions or somethin’.
* Speaking of the Bears, tight end Martellus Bennett was fined $22,050 for using using abusive and insulting language toward an official in last Sunday’s loss to the Lions. That was the same amount that Lions defensive lineman Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah received for unnecessary roughness against quarterback Jimmy Clausen. That was the play that knocked Clausen’s helmet off and had him ready to fight Ansah. Something says the NFL needs to review its fine policy. Not to mention its punishment policy. Clausen subsequently was deemed to be concussed and won’t be suiting up Sunday. Maybe an eye-for-an-eye concept would cut down on such hits. Meaning if you knock a guy out of the next game or games, you miss them, too. Unfair? Maybe. But why shouldn’t the NFL be like life? Asking for a friend.
* And, no, Bennett’s words are not covered by the First Amendment.
* Speaking of freedom of expression, I must admit I do like that Pete Rose Skechers commercial. Maybe the reason is that it’s funny. Maybe the reason is that his lovely significant other Kiana Kim is in it. Maybe both. Not sure that the ad will gain him any Hall of Fame votes, but what the heck.
