Sox’ Konerko a Quick Study at Plate, Not Afoot

May 27, 2012 @ No Comments

Sunday smorgasbord: Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko is hitting .396 this season. Will he be the first .400 hitter in the big leagues since Ted Williams batted .406 for the Boston Red Sox in 1941? Quick answer: no — because Konerko lacks foot speed and the ability to beat out infield hits that come in handy in attaining such a lofty level. Not-so-quick answer: maybe — if he has enough 4-for-4 days as he did Saturday (May 26) in the team’s victory against the Cleveland Indians. He does have a shot at leading the league in hitting. Not to mention leading in fewest triples for a batter with 400 or more plate appearances (well, assuming he can keep that number at zero).

Christy Hemme will be part of the PCW event June 16 in Oak Lawn, Ill.

* It’s obvious that the Chicago Cubs, who lost 3-2 Saturday night at Pittsburgh to the Pirates on a bases-loaded hit batter in the ninth inning, are struggling. Things are so bad that their record in the last 10 games is 0-11.

* If the object of the Theo Epstein regime is for the Cubs to gain the No. 1 pick in baseball’s draft, the plan is working. Such a plan involving the draft also is daft. A No. 1 pick in basketball can make a major franchise difference; in baseball not so much.
