Talking Trash: Santo Souvenir, MJ, Lions Exec

October 2, 2013 @ No Comments

Midweek musings (with a bit of trash-talking and talking about trash to start things off): OK, it’s one thing to kick manager Dale Sveum to the curb, as the Chicago Cubs did Monday. It’s another to toss Ron Santo-related memorabilia in the trash — which is what the Cubs did in a bit of housecleaning. The team apologized Tuesday. Included in items dispoed of was a large card signed by fans for the family of the late Cubs third baseman and broadcaster. Guess the Cubs need to work on fundamentals for more than the players.

* Speaking of trash, former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan perhaps was merely voicing an honest opinion, although with his competitive fire, hey, who knows? MJ said in an interview promoting a video game His Airness — in his prime — would have beaten Miami Heat standout LeBron James one-on-one. “I don’t think I would lose other than to Kobe Bryant, because he steals all of my moves.” Tweeted Bryant: Domino effect. I stole some of his..this generation stole some of mine #thecycle

* Speaking of top-flight NBA talent, Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose sat out Monday’s practice. It was a scheduled rest day. Training camp began Saturday, so you can understand. No? No. Could have sworn Rose took the entire 2012-13 season off after anterior cruciate ligament surgery. So you’d think he’d be well-rested. Well, that wasn’t long enough? And some folks thought the recuperation was complete — physically and otherwise. Of course, we can only assume Rose and coach Tom Thibodeau have a better idea about all this. Well, we can only hope they do.

* Meanwhile, back in the wonderful of trash-talking, Detroit Lions vice chairman Bill Ford Jr. — speaking at a charity event — had a curious comment about the Lions’ 40-32 home victory over the Bears and the atmosphere in the stadium: “It was really alive, and it was alive when we played those same bunch of thugs on Monday night, you know, last year [actually 2011].” A Lions spokesman said Ford was “joking” about insulting the Bears. Apparently because calling opponents thugs is so funny.

* From our department of self-promotion (which has been dormant for far too long), may we offer this: “Sports & Torts” — the interview program co-hosts by David Spada and Elliott Harris on Talkzone.com — is urging you and everyone else to voting at podcast.com for for the Peoples Choice, Best Produced, Best Video Podcast and Best Sports Podcast. Go to podcastawards.com and type in our show name and URL. Here is the URL: http://www.talkzone.com/shows/155/1660.html.

* Speaking of self-promotion (actually it’s more self-congratulatory), thank you to the folks who visited this site in September. With more than 951,000 hits in September, the statistical analysts at elliottharris.com have calculated that we were less than 49,000 hits shy of one million for the month. And, yes, it did take the stats department until Oct. 2 to figure that all out.
