It was a beautiful night Friday [June 8] in Chicago for baseball, basketball, a concert at Wrigley Field, softball and more. Take your pick. For those of us who opted for something indoors with air conditioning, there was the Chicago Sky’s game at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont.
Christy Hemme will be at Dream Night 11 on June 16 in Oak Lawn, Ill.
A furious fourth-quarter rally, highlighted by guard Epiphanny Prince’s three-point field goal with 0.1 left, forced overtime in what became a 98-91 victory for the Sky (5-1) against the Tulsa Shock (0-7). Prince scored 32 points in becoming the second player in WNBA history with three consecutive 30-point games. Cynthia Cooper was the first in 1997.
Forward Tamera Young added 16 points of the bench. Starters Sylvia Fowles, Swin Cash and Courtney Vandersloot each had 14 points. Fowles had a game-high 21 rebounds. Ivory Latta led Tulsa with 25 points, while fellow reserves Scholanda Dorrell and Glory Johnson each scored 17.
The Sky set a team record for turnovers with 28. The previous high also was this season (June 2) at Atlanta. The Sky is off to the best start in franchise history and is tied for the longest winning streak (four games, 2010) in team history. The previous quickest start to five victories was in 2009 when the team posted its fifth victory in its eighth game.
Sky coach Pokey Chatman said after the game she was uncertain when newcomer Ticha Penicheiro, the league’s all-time assist leader who has been idled by a lower-leg injury, would be able to play.
“Three to five [days],” Chatman said. “Could be seven.”
The Sky’s next game is Sunday (June 10) at New York before returning home Wednesday (June 13) to face Seattle.
Not too far from the Allstate Arena, the National Pro Fastpitch Chicago Bandits lost 9-3 Friday to the USSSA Pride at the Ballpark at Rosemont. Each team is 1-1. Before Saturday’s game, legendary pitcher Jennie Finch will sign autographs 6-7 p.m.) and have her Bandits jersey officially retired. Bandits players also will receive their 2011 championship rings. A fireworks show, the first at the ballpark, will be held postgame.
And then there was Wrigley Field, venerable home to the Chicago Cubs and more recently to concerts featuring legendary performers. Friday’s was Roger Waters of Pink Floyd fame. He was there with his The Wall production.
Christy Hemme is among the personalities who will highlight Pro Championship Wrestling’s “Dream Night 11.” She will referee the women’s title match.
Also scheduled for special guest appearances are 2002 WWE Hall of Famer “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase and 2012 WWE Hall of Famer Ron Simmons. Some of us will be more focused on TNA Knockout Christy.
Dream Night 11 will be June 16 at the Oak Lawn (Ill.) Pavilion, 9401 Oak Park Ave., Oak Lawn. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with bell time 6:30.
