Sunday smorgasbord: Well, the U.S. men’s hockey team certainly found a way not to be embarrassed by having to receive the bronze medal at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The Americans lost 5-0 to Finland in Saturday’s bronze-medal game. You could call it an amateurish effort on the Americans’ part — except that would be an insult to amateurs.
* If it is any consolation to Chicago Blackhawks fans (and the guess here is that it is), Canada and Sweden play for the gold medal on Sunday (or already have by the time some of you are reading this). The Hawks have three representatives on each team.
* If it’s any consolation to Blackhawks fans (and the guess here is that it isn’t), Patrick Kane missed two penalty shots against Finland.
* If it’s any consolation to Team USA hockey fans (and the guess here is that it definitely is not), maybe Finland is a better team than its U.S. counterparts.
* If nothing else, the U.S. squad showed the Americans can lose with NHL players as easily (it not even moreso) as it can without them.
* Word is LeBron James may sit out Sunday’s Miami Heat-Chicago Bulls game because of a broken nose. Which will leave television officials with broken hearts — especially when they see the numbers for the telecast. Maybe James and injured Bulls star Derrick Rose can engage in a game of H-O-R-S-E or something at halftime to provide some entertainment.
* As regular readers (and even the constipated one) of this space may know, your humble correspondent is not a big fan of college basketball coaches (gym teachers in coats and ties) ranting on the sidelines like petulant children. In the case of Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim going after the officials on an offensive foul call that he disagreed with Saturday night late in the game against Duke, we just might be willing to make an exception. The lack of composure on the court was a sharp contrast to the good-natured persona Boeheim exhibited in his postgame press conference.
* Somewhere on Twitter Saturday was a tweet about Missouri defensive end Michael Sam saying no team had asked him about sexual orientation or anything like that at the NFL combine in Indianapolis. Which might be one of the reasons that he made it known recently that he is a gay person. As if it’s any potential employer’s right to be able to ask about a person’s sexual orientation?
* The NFL may be ready to institute a policy for penalizing players who use the racial epithet “nigger.” No word whether penalizing players for using homophobic slurs will be part of any NFL policy any time soon. Yeah, you’d hate to think NFL players would have to resort to civilized trash-talking rather than vulgar verbiage.
