Midweek musings: OK, so what was more mind-boggling in the Chicago Bulls 104-86 victory vs. the visiting Sacramento Kings Tuesday night — Tony Snell scoring a career-high 24 points or leading the team in minutes played (41)? Or the fact that Derrick Rose posted a big, fat zero? Nada, zilch, nothing — in turnovers. Yeah, didn’t see any of that coming.
* The Bulls victory featured the return of Mike Dunleavy to the lineup after missing 19 games. And Jimmy Butler sitting out the second half because of a shoulder injury.
* Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau felt so comfortable about the outcome that center Nazr Mohamed actually played — all of one minute (1:06 to be precise). Your humble correspondent was not at the game so we cannot verify that Mohammed had difficulty finding the scorer’s table to enter the game. Mohammed has to be leading the league in money earned per minutes played (among healthy players).
* Bulls rookie Doug McDermott also played the final 1:06 and had three points. Meaning he was on pace to score roughly 144 points if he played all 48. Yes, we know that’s silly (OK, even stupid, some might say). He probably wouldn’t have played more than 40 minutes, so he would have scored only about 120.
* Speaking of playing time, Butler logged 22 minutes. Meaning he should be well-rested (if not entirely healthy) when Cleveland visits the United Center on Thursday. Pau Gasol played 38 minutes (26 points, 16 rebounds) in posting his 13th consecutive double-double. Nikola Mirotic played 12 minutes. Guessing Thibodeau wants the rookie well-rested for his all-star weekend appearance. Rose had 23 points and seven assists in 33 minutes. Maybe performances like that can convince him that being a facilitator can improve the team — not to mention his scoring average.
* If it’s Wednesday (chances looking pretty good, considering yesterday was Tuesday), then the next edition of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris Talkzone.com can’t be far away. The highly acclaimed interview show (well, it is held in such high regard in the Spada and Harris households as well as reportedly elsewhere) broadcasts at noon Central time on Talkzone.com. The guest for Feb. 12, 2015, is former Cleveland Browns offensive guard John Wooten, who nowadays is the chairman of the Fritz Pollard Alliance. Wooten is the sole guest on the 60-minute show and chats about a wide range of topics from growing up in New Mexico to his college days at Colorado to blocking for Jim Brown and working for racial equality in the world of football and beyond.
* For those folks in the audience interested in swimsuits (OK, maybe more interested in the swimsuit models), we have more video from the 2015 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. Featured today are Chrissy Teigen and rookie Rose Bertram. If things go according to plan (and they actually do from time to time around here), there will be more photos and video here in Thursday’s offering. Yeah, it’s what some of us like to think of work. That and more fodder for a cyberspace version of the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service (and, yes, we already double-check the spelling of “public” to make sure it contains all the letters).
