Oh, sure. Now the White Sox are playing like the team some folks thought would finish atop the American League Central this season. Better late than never?
Something says it might be too late. Not that anyone on the editorial staff at elliottharris.com is a math whiz or anything, but the calculating is fairly simple.
The Detroit Tigers are 80-62 and the White Sox are 71-69. Meaning the Sox are eight games behind the AL Central Leaders, although only a mere seven on the loss side. Also meaning the Tigers have 20 games remain and the Sox 22.
* If the Tigers go 10-10, the Sox need to go 19-3 to finish with identical 90-72 records.
* If the Tigers go 12-8, the Sox need to go 21-1 to match Detroit’s 92-70 record.
* If the Tigers should falter slightly and go 5-15, the Sox need to go 14-8 to finish 85-77.
An AL Central title for the Sox this season? Improbable but not impossible. Well, provided that the Tigers cooperate and the Sox continue to shut out opponents. Or at least defeat them.
In what appears to be Jake Peavy’s final start of the season, the Sox defeated the Minnesota Twins 3-0 Tuesday night in Minneapolis for their third consecutive victory and second shutout in a row.
“I had a good game plan,” said Peavy, who struck out a season-high nine.
“I’m not pleased anytime I got out there and go 6 1/3, but at the same time, it’s a shutout win for the boys. And after all I’ve been through this year, I’ll take that any day of the week.”
Detroit’s magic number to clinch the division is 14. Peavy’s magic number might be 2012.
