Midweek musings: It difficult to figure out where is more unlikely regarding the Chicago White Sox’ victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Tuesday — the fact they scored only two runs and prevailed 2-1 on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth or that the bullpen did its job (2 1/3 hitless, scoreless innings).
* White Sox designated hitter Adam Dunn, who homered and walked three times, leads the American League in on-base percentage at .468. Teammate Alexei Ramirez, who scored the winning run and went 1-for-3 with a walk, is second at .466. Interesting in that Ramirez is batting .414 and Dunn .294.
* The Cubs-New York Yankees game at Yankee Stadium was rained out Tuesday. Meaning both teams’ fans who might have had a conflict because of the second night of Passover were able to enjoy the celebration without missing any baseball. If this is not a sure sign that God is a baseball fan (not to mention a fan of Jewish baseball fans), then I don’t know what further persuasion you need. Provided that there is a God. If there isn’t, then it’s merely a happy coincidence that the weather washed out the game.
* If this is Wednesday (which seems likely because yesterday was Tuesday — provided that you are reading this on April 16, 2014, or a subsequent Wednesday), then it is almost time for another edition of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris. The program, which is broadcast on Thursdays at noon Central time, will feature baseball Hall of Fame pitchers Phil Niekro and Rollie Fingers on the April 17 episode. The show also will be available later in the day Thursday via podcast at Talkzone.com.
* Some recent odds from the fine folks at Bovada, (www.Bovada.lv, Twitter: @BovadaLV) on who will be the first manager fired this season: John Gibbons (2/1), Kirk Gibson (5/2), Ned Yost (5/1), Terry Collins (5/1), Bo Porter (7/1), Mike Scioscia (12/1). Given the reality that the Arizona Diamondbacks are 4-13 overall and 1-10 at home with a five-game losing streak and the worst record in the big leagues, Gibson might merit some updated odds. If “merit” is the correct verb.
