Thursday thoughts (or what passes for them around here): Now that the Chicago White Sox have signed first baseman/designated hitter Paul Konerko to a one-year deal, he can end his career with the team that he has played for for 15 seasons. It’s rare to see a team show such loyalty to a player. Especially considering Konerko hit .244 with 12 home runs and 54 runs batted in in 2013. Something says a more significant number in the decision to bring back Konerko was the one involving his salary.
* Speaking of signings, the Chicago Cubs appear to have a deal with Wesley Wright. The left-hander went 0-4 last season with the Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Rays. He had a 3.69 earned-run average in 70 games in 2013. It would appear the Cubs front office is waiting until perhaps next week’s Winter Meetings to make an addition to the roster that might excite its fan base (in this case meaning other than Wright’s family and friends).
* Speaking of the Cubs, the Class A Daytona Beach Cubs were named Baseball America’s Minor League Team of the Year. Which should be quite a cause for celebration among Cubs fans and officials. Because you know what winning that title means, don’t you? In the not too distant future, the Chicago Cubs have an excellent chance of being Baseball America’s Minor League Team of the Year.
Derrick Rose is going to have his first media interaction since undergoing season-ending surgery on his right knee. The gathering after Bulls practice Thursday at the Berto Center is sure to be captivating. No? No. Rose will rededicate himself to coming back better than ever and winning an NBA title with the Bulls. Comcast SportsNet plans to show the live activity. Something says it will sound a lot like anything he said after his 2012 knee injury in the postseason that sidelined him for the 2012-13 season.
* Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade did not play in his team’s home loss Tuesday to Detroit. If he does not play in Thursday’s game against the Chicago Bulls at the United Center, the Bulls might have a chance. Well, if it’s a game of 5-on-4 in the Bulls’ favor
If today is Thursday (and reliable sources say it — mainly because yesterday was Wednesday, provided that you are reading this on Dec. 5, 2013, or a subsequent Thursday), then it time once again for everybody’s favorite interview show “Sports & Torts” at noon Central time on Talkzone.com. Well, the show is certainly the favorite of co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris .
Of course, one of the reasons people tune in for “Sports & Torts” is the presence of a wonderful woman on most weeks. The fetching female on the Dec. 5 edition if Playboy Playmate Kennedy Summers. Miss December 2013 not only is a beauty but she has brains to go with that. Kennedy is a medical student with aspirations of becoming a cosmetic surgeon (more than the superficial variety).
Also on the show will be former football star Herschel Walker, who enjoyed an incredible career at the University of Georgia, in the USFL and NFL.
Both guests make for interesting interviews. Thanks to the show’s executive producer Dave Olson, there should be a fair share of photos of Kennedy. And of Herschel, too — although the attire for the two will vastly different.
For those who might be unable to tune in to the show and/or who might like to enjoy an encore performance, the highly regarded program (well, certainly in the Spada and Harris households, as well as reportedly elsewhere) will be available on podcast on the Talkzone.com site later Thursday (and presumably forever in the Talkzone archives).
Here is where to go for a daily dose of non-gratuitous video (thanks to the energetic efforts of the editorial and video departments at elliottharris.com):
